Looking for OR creating work opportunities [Skybridge Translation]

Have had this on my mind for a while now.  In the process of finishing my degree in translation along with my fellow classmates at Concordia University in Montreal, Qc, Canada.  Would be a great idea to build a team together.  The prospects of building a trusting team / business relationship with them is exciting.  It’s simply a question of scheduling meetups and discussing how to take aim at the local translation market opportunities and succeeding.  Creating a team of people who can write smart RFC’s, people who can translate and revise, tapping in on each person’s personal interests and expertise, and having a few people represent and communicate with the customers and have the translators work without being bothered by the customers is obviously a good way to organize the team.

What’s pushing me to create this team and perhaps name it Skybridge Translation?   The current work opportunities seem to all point to internships that don’t necessarily pay money, but simply give you experience.  Perhaps there are some that pay well, but the job security is perhaps not so great, given that companies come and go, change names, merge, move off to other parts of the world etc … The news seems to persuade me about this dire economic trend.  Why not do something about it?  Stop looking, just create your own job!

Last years project management topics and the interesting variety of guest speakers who have built careers and businesses with their own initiative, have given me hope that doing business here in Montreal is a possibility.  It has the 2nd most populous international student population after the Boston area and the idea of tapping into a multilingual student population that can help translate material for all kinds of businesses is stimulating. Students graduating in finance, who after 2-3 years are still looking for work here, offer an interesting opportunity for using their knowledge and expertise to translate in this field.  I’m currently building good relationships with people doing their masters and undergrad degrees in a wide variety of fields including accounting, statistics and finance.  Most of these students speak Chinese and English.  My classmates also have excellent qualifications to do translation in Spanish, German, French & English.

Keeping things on a realistic level, Skybridge Translation will start by working with the following language pairs: En-Fr / Fr-En since those are the official languages in the area.  As things develop I want to tap into other language pairs including Spanish, English, French and Chinese.
